清和院町の町家
京都御所の西側の住宅地の一角に位置する古い町家の改修である。延べ床面積が２５坪程度の小規模な町家であったが，日本酒のバーを一角に設けたうえでの住宅としての改修という条件のため，店舗部分と住居部分を明確に区分けする必要があった。そのため，町家が本来持っていた奥へと連続する空間のつながりという特質をキャンセルせざるを得なかった。
そこで，視覚的な連続性のかわりに奥へ連続する空間が見えなくてもその気配を感じさせるような，心理的な連続性を想起させる建築的な仕掛けによって，空間の体験者に空間の広がりを感じさせることができないか，と考えた。たとえば，床のタイルのパターンが連続し，隣り合う空間にまで越境していれば，その境界が建具などで閉じられていたとしてもその先の広がりが感じられたりするようなことがあるように。
この町家では，クライアントが一緒に暮らしている猫のために，全ての場所で床から一定程度の高さまで腰壁を立ち上げる必要があった。また，キッチンや手洗いなどでは，水で濡れない高さまで腰壁の高さが必要である。そこで，それぞれの場所で決められた高さの腰壁を，部屋をまたいで隣り合うスペースまで越境して連続させている。
場所ごとに必要な腰壁の高さが異なるため，それらが延長されてきて隣の腰壁とぶつかる場所には，室内に突如その段差が現れることになる。あえてその不自然な段差を室内に露呈させることは，小さく細分化された空間においても，つい隣にある空間を想起してしまうことにつながる。小さな空間の連なりに，隣接する空間からの連続性を想起させる巾木の操作を行うことで、狭いながらも心理的には広がりを感じるような、体験を生み出せないかと考えた。
House in Seiwain-cho
This project renovates a small townhouse of about 25 tsubo (82 m²), located in a residential area west of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The design needed to accommodate both a residence and a sake bar, requiring clear separation between the commercial and living areas. This meant the townhouse’s original spatial continuity toward the back garden could no longer be maintained.
Instead, the design introduces a sense of psychological continuity, allowing the presence of adjoining spaces to be felt even when not directly visible. For example, continuous floor tile patterns or wall elements crossing room boundaries suggest spatial extension beyond closed partitions.
For functional reasons, dado walls were installed throughout: to protect surfaces from the client’s cat and to resist water in kitchen and wash areas. Their heights varied by location but were extended across multiple rooms, creating continuous horizontal lines. Where different heights met, level shifts appeared and were intentionally left visible.
These subtle discontinuities hint at adjacent spaces, giving the compact townhouse an unexpected sense of depth. By turning practical necessities into spatial devices, the renovation transforms small divided rooms into an experience of openness and connection.
